I've posted the two files up there. XF86Config-4 you can see there predates my recent upgrade to debian sarge (when the problems began). This says to me that X (or sarge) is acting different than the prior X and debian version (woody). This appears to be unrelated to galeon itself, so I've taken the problem to a Debian list. Looking at the log (and other logs with differing errors related to the 1600x1200 resolution that I have successfully used up till now), there is always some problem or other that prevents use of the 1600x1200 resolution. Sometimes it is just an "insufficient memory" problem, sometimes some modeline-related problem. My video card is old (but excellent MGA Millennium) and it seems that XFree86 4.3.0 (as modified for Debian by Debian's maintainer) simply treats my card slightly differently than the prior installed X version (don't recall its version).
