Galeon & DEbian

The version of Galeon in Debian Etch/Testing has recently started
behaving really strangely. I think it's switched from being built on
Mozilla to Firefox or something. But it's gained a whole host of
undesired mannerisms, like if you open a tab in the background, and
the URL fails to resolve and so it brings up a dialog box, then that
tab is opened distracting you; or if you press the "up" or "down" keys
in text edit fields, you go to the start or end of the line above or
below (rather than approximately the same spot as in every other
program); or "find as you type" brings up a little bar at the bottom
with a few buttons that's really annoying that goes away when you
don't want it to, and doesn't go away when you do want it to. (The
latter two are how Firefox also behaves in contrast to
Mozilla&Epiphany, which behave normally on my system.)

So does anyone know:
(a) is it possible to get Galeon/ff to behave normally short of
recompiling by changing configuration settings?
(b) does someone have a Debian/Etch version of Galeon that behaves
like it used to that I could use?
(c) I've tried recompiling it on my own system, but I get an error
informing me that "MOZILLA_FIVE_HOME" needs to be set ... but (I
think) I've set it appropriately (to /usr/lib/mozilla, same setting as
/usr/bin/mozilla), and it doesn't work. Is there something else that
could mean?
