Print dialog - setting default printer, paper

I run Galeon 1.3.21 on Debian Linux w/ kernel 2.6.12-1-386.

I like Galeon, in spite of the trials post-version 1.2.

Please pardon if I am slow to answer; some days it is difficult
to find time to check personal email from work.

I have tried over and over again to set the default printer that
comes up in the galeon _print dialog box_.  (NOTE:  not the same
as the usual so-called "default print command", whose value is
"lpr" in my case and I"ve no quarrel with that.)  There seem to
be jillions of so-called "print.tmp.printerfeatures" values for
all these printers.

I would at this point be content to just have a single printer
show up: surely it would be the default printer then!

I would want the printer to be called either
"PostScript/default" or "PostScript/hp5l" since that is my
actual printer.  These both are in the current prefs.js and
hence in Galeon's print dialog box, but neither is the default
printer.

If I can get the default printer as I wish, then I would also
like to set the default paper size to be "Letter".  "Letter"
does show in the choices for my "PostScript/default" printer but
again not as the default.

I actually want to know how to do this as intended so that I might
have a fighting chance changing other galeon settings.  I guess
with one caveat:  I run debian partly because I don't wish to
install _everything_ and strongly prefer not to install all of
gnome - surely I must have the files needed already??

I can edit any file using vim if need be, including non-ascii
files.

I have tried editing ~/.galeon/mozilla/galeon/prefs.js (with
galeon closed, of course) to eliminate all reference to any
printer except the only one I use.  And, voila, when I restart
galeon, several other printers data is placed back into that
very prefs.js file.  I can't figure out where it got the other
printers' data from, so I can't seem to prevent it happening.


I have tried using gconf-editor but can't seem to find any key
to set a default printer (for the Galeon print dialog box,
recall).

Ditto for "about:config".

Any suggestions?  This can't be that hard, but it has sure
stumped me.
