Galeon dies past basic ASCII

I'm running galeon 2.0.2 on Debian Etch. The installation seemed
uneventful, although I should mention that I didn't install any
desktop. 

Basically, galeon regularly hangs and I have to kill its process. I
disabled javascript, but doing that had no effect. The hangs are
associated with my saving content, such as trying to save a web page.   
When I save a page, the document content is saved up to a point and
then stops to be replaced by a hugh number of spaces. For example:

  ... that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of
Happiness. 
                         
...

To give some idea of the number of these spaces, the file saved in
iceweasel is about 25 Kb, while saved by galeon it is 12 Mb. 

Right after "Happiness." in the text, is found an "&mdash".

I create a local test html file that contains only "test —
test", display it in galeon, which hangs when I try to save it. I
tried with "—" and galeon hangs with it as well. It also hangs
with an n-dash (–). However, saving text with basic ASCII
entities, such as b, is no problem.  

I'm using in galeon preferences, ISO 8859-1 encoding. I should add
that I have:

Another oddity. In the Save As... dialog, the "Save with Content" box
is not checked, but it neverthess creates a folder to save the graphic
files and stylesheet file.
