Hopefully in would at least reduce the bots.

Some though, are humans and some are quite good at it. Take this for  
instance: http://gallery.menalto.com/node/108192. Almost certainly a  
spammer - there has been an unnatural surge in posts asking silly but  
plausible questions about using Gallery. Many do have a giveaway spam  
link as a signature though although this doesn't.

Also can't recollect how it handles users already registered as I  
noted one of the spammers that hit the site the other day had  
registered 30 weeks ago!

Even if it only cuts the new spam accounts, the seeded ones will be  
slowly rubbed out over time as one thing that really works well is the  
"block spammer" as it cross matches other posts.

Perhaps looking at the volume of traffic getting passed to mollom  
after a while could give an idea of whether it is helping or not.
