That's actually a very good question.  The benefits of staying up to date
are not always apparent but they will be significant as time goes on.  For
example, PHP 5.5 adds a finally{} block and other language semantics that
may make our coding significantly easier.  We can adopt those things in
K2.4, but we'll be behind the power curve because we won't get the benefit
of the Kohana team pushing their framework forward.  While we were on K2 we
consistently stayed up to date and the improvements that they added were
worthwhile to us.  From Kohana's pace, I expect equally useful improvements
to come downstream to us.

Will it be costly?  Sure.  But I think that in the long run we'll look back
on this cost as a significant, but one-time event and be happy that we paid
it.
