I have done different compression levels in the past, but I haven't
observed any appreciable difference in indexing time.  I believe high
compressing in memory is less expensive than the extra writing to disk.

Machines are different; I believe:

Slow_CPU/Fast_Disk:   Lower  compression -> Faster index
Fast_CPU/Slow_Disk:   Higher compression -> Faster index
