Ok, using Lachlan's "time" suggestion, here are the results:

Some of the local sites that I'm indexing serve PDFs but I do not have 
htdig configured to do anything with them. I don't know where that 
error is coming from in version 3.1.6. Remember, I am using the default 
htdig.conf file for these tests with the one exception that I'm 
changing the start_url to be a handful of sites I have on my local 
machine.
