Do searches appear to be working correctly otherwise? You shouldn't even
need to enable allow_numbers in order to pick up terms that begin with
numbers, unless those terms consist only of numbers.

Have you verified that the pages that contain the expected terms are in
fact being indexed? Have you or your host made any other modifications
to the config file being used for indexing?
