Searching within results

I'm trying to setup my htdig (version 3.1.6) so that users can select to search within the results of a search that they may have just run. I had thought that the "refine search" field was used for this purpose, but it seems that "refine search" just leads to a totally new search being run using the entire search database, not just the existing results page. Any hints on how I might setup a "search within results" feature?
