Thank you for your replay Douglas,

the original line in my case (version 3.1.6) was

  $BINDIR/htdig $init $opts $stats $alt

I modified it to

  $BINDIR/htdig -i -u my_username:my_password $opts $stats $alt

but then rundig stops immediately again. The username/password spelling
is checked many times, what else can be wrong?

rundig works as usual as soon as I remove the username:password part and
breaks as soon as I put it back.

regards,
Jan
