And I think he must be right that the problem is related to the part of our site that is located in a PHP/MySQL based CMS. As long as I do not provide provide the username/password, htdig works well also on this part of our site (except the few pages/directories that really need authorization of course). As soon as I provide the correct username/password (only letters/numbers) in rundig or htdig.conf htdig stops working on this part of our site - including the part that does not require authorization. To verify that htdig & authorization itsef actually works, I created a static HTML file that links to password protected PDF files and used that static page as start_url. The PDF-file was indexed normally. But not if start_url is the CMS page that normally contains the links to the PDF files. I am not able to interpret the output from -vvv, but I can provide it if anyone cares to have a look at it.
