Supposedly you can upgrade the Mac Mini hard drives and see noticeable improvements in performance. You should be able to find quite a few articles on this issue if you search around the web. However depending on your needs the money might be better spent scraping together the pieces for a generic PC or picking up a used G4 if you need to go with a Mac. ht://Dig ran fairly well on one of my old G4's both under OS X and Yellow Dog. I am not sure that there is much you can do at the ht://Dig level that will significantly improve performance. You might try playing with the database compression level and the size of the stored excerpts.
