Files to exclude

I am using htdig 3.1.6 on an HP ProLiant DL360G4 with Red Hat ES Linux 4. I want to exclude some .php files in several directories and all .php files in other directories, but not exclude all php files on the web site. I have tried directory/*.php in htdig.conf 'exclude_urls' but that does not work. Any suggestions please.
