htsearch file size and performance

I have just reinstalled and re configured htdig 3.1.6 on our new 
ProLiant DL360 G4 server running Red Hat ES Linux 4 with Apache 2. I 
have noticed the file htsearch is much smaller in size than the 
installation on our old server. The old file is 1,081,197 in size and 
the new one is 560,604. Why?

I have also noticed that indexing is considerably slower. If I use 
the original config and files from the old server it runs like a race car.
