Problem with old dates

I am using htdig to index the archives of a publication that is older than dirt, which is to say it goes back further than 12/31/69. I've got use_doc_date turned on, and the actual publication date of each article is in the metadata of the page. It works for articles published since the epoch, but any date older than that is getting bashed to 12/31/69 in the search results. Is there anything I can do to prevent this? Oh, I'm using htdig 3.1.6. I did search the archives but did not find anything.
