Searching https Web Sites With htdig

I'm helping my employer roll out htdig for running searches against our
intranet web sites. htdig works great for our sites using http, but it fails
to retrieve information for any web pages starting with "https". We're using
htdig version 3.1.6.
 
Is there a solution? Please help. Thanks!
