Getting a document count by type

I set up an htdig installation for our corporate intranet; it works very
well and everyone is quite happy. Recently one of the web admins asked
me if we could get a count of the numbers of the types of pages (.htm,
.asp, etc) that htdig actually crawls.

I added:

doc_list: /tmp/documents.txt

to htdig.conf, and I thought I would just parse that file for the
information, but it didn't get generated for some reason. Do I need to
do something else to create this file?

Is there a more elegant way to do this sort of thing?

Thanks,

Hugh
