Load problem while indexing

I'm using ht/dig 3.2.0b6-1 (from Debian) to index our webserver.

During indexing, our nagios installation reports that the webserver is
not responding -- generating the index seems to stress the machine to
the point where it doesn't accept any HTTP connections.

I already added:
server_wait_time:       10

to the htdig.conf, that didn't help. I let "rundig" run at nice level
20, that didn't help either. What am I doing wrong?
