Nested Span.

Using Tidy 1 Jan 2004 (but I think later versions are the same).

XHTML Transitional doctype

<p>text <span class="a">more text <span lang="la">latin text</span> text
</span> text </p>

Gives "Warning: nested emphasis <span>"

I can see that they are not common, but there are legitimate uses of nested
span so is the warning necessary?
