Tidy + escaped html quotes

Tidy converts this html:

<td bgcolor=\"#ffffff\" width=\"8%\"  height=\"17px\" valign=\"middle\"
align=\"center\">1</td>

to this:

<td bgcolor="\" width="\" height="\" valign="\" align="\">1</td>


And i can't seem to figure out the right tidy options/combonation of
options to treat the escaped quotes properly.
Removal of the backslashes would be a fine solution as well.

My question is, Is there anyway to get Tidy to handle this html properly?
(i.e.: not removing the attribute values? )
