You can try to escape the pound symbol to the web page using the value &#163


A rough example of that would be:

<html>
	<head>
	</head>
	<body>
		<p>&#163</p>
	</body>
</html>

"£" is a valid character in "latin1". You can try "ascii".
Failing that, you will have to modify tidy to suit your own needs.
