DOM -> form access

I've been using httpunit for a while and quite pleased with its form/request/response API. I have an issue where I need to be able to find a form element using XPath. The problem is that I can find form elements using the httpunit API and fill them in for the request/responses, and I can use DOM to look up a form element, but I see no way to associate an element in that DOM model with the form element. If anyone has done anything similar or has suggestions for how I might associate the two, I would very much appreciate it.
