javascript: Setting Style Display supported?

The following line of javascript fails with 

"failed: org.mozilla.javascript.EvaluatorException:
The undefined value has no properties."


document.searchform.stringCompareBy.style.display =
"none";

I found an email in the mailing list archives that
said the older versions of httpunit don't support
this, but newer versions do.  Does anyone know what
the status of this is?
