Yes Peter your way seems give less trouble. I have tested the most popular libraries in python seems enough simply. Tested libs: mssql: pymssql(without odbc more direct), pyodbc(with freetds) mysql: mysql.connector(more supported and recent), MySQLdb HTRH.
