Getting colored text in xterm?

When I run links in an xterm (TERM=xterm) I don't get any colors for text.
Running lynx in the same xterm I get nice text colors.  The screenshots
here: http://artax.karlin.mff.cuni.cz/~mikulas/links/screenshots/jpg.html
show colored text.  How do I enable this?

I'm running konsole under KDE 3.1, Gentoo GNU/Linux.
