[links] Another Newbie question

Dear List:
I have compiled several versions of links and elinks on this 2.0.20 kernel
machine (monkey linux) and am very impressed.
However I keep failing to get SSL support. I have OpenSSL 0.9.1c on the
machine and it seems healthy as it runs tests.
The Links Configure script refuses to see OpenSSL. I have seen other such
complaints in the archives. After reading through the configure script and
altering things, and playing with it, I can't even see how it is meant to
test for openssl.
Help please?
