I talk as a plain user here so bear with me...
Kanji seems to be not implemented at all.
Katakana and Hiragana are not complete when rendering in graphics mode, but
I don't think this is related to UTF-8, because my us-ascii encoded files
are not correctly displayed either.
Finally, when rendering in text mode, vowels (e,i,u,e,o) and n get followed
by a 5 (hiragana) or 6 (katakana) figure, which gets quite annoying.
