[links] Multi-byte supporting

I'm looking for some ultra-lightweight browser and links is the
definitely choice.

But the problem is links lacks multi-byte supporting, multi-byte chars
was shown as "*". I tried to figure out some solution in the source
code, but have no clue.

So I'm looking for some help here. Where should I begin? Any hints? Is
there any similar approaches before?
