not the access of basic html gmail, predates this.
Also as described, how search is acting seems  sightly unrelated.
Save that terminal mode mirrors the lower graphics environment some use 
here, so perhaps there is a connection.
Interesting that google can control the  browsers of well thousands in 
such a   way without their knowledge.
