video/audio in lynx

This concerns lynx version 2.9.2 (31 May 2024)
built on OpenBSD-current.

I would like to know if lynx is able to launch the appropriate program
when selecting an audio or video file.

I thought I could do this with configuring lynx with --enable-externs
and setting VIEWER:video/mkv:mpv %s &:XWINDOWS
in /etc/lynx.cfg but that doesn't seem to work.
