I didn't introduce site safety in the context of Google's search engine. 
  The only reason I mentioned Google is that its  AI gave me an easy way 
of getting to relevant information in a compact form, to show what the 
OP should have been able to find with a bit of research effort.

The https everywhere initiative doesn't discriminate against Lynx, but 
rather against old systems.  Once you make security important, you have 
to continually update software as vulnerabilities are discovered, and 
that means you can't use 18 year old software and expect it to be secure.

Google wasn't listed as a site that was causing an issue, and the 
failure reported was one that would mean that the  web site would not 
have been able to identify the browser, as that would require it to have 
seen the plain text.
