OK, looks like we solved it. It turns out that the lynx cfg file has a way of 
associating file types to mime types. As an example
SUFFIX:.aac:audio/aac 
This creates an association for lynx for aac file types to the correct mime 
type. Thanks all of you along the way for your guidance.
