I'm all for collaboration, but not at the expense of watering down Mason into just another syntax variant. If TT can support Mason's autohandlers, dhandlers, component inheritance, arguments, and other features via a pluggable architecture, I'll be very impressed, but I doubt that's Andy's goal. Also, some of Mason's features are intricately tied to the notion of "perl inside the template", and TT has traditionally shied away from this. Anyway, we'll have to see how the project progresses.
