I suspect that it's because mod_dir runs in the Apache response phase, 
and because Mason does, too, it replaces mod_dir. If Mason declines, 
then the default Apache handler, including mod_dir, will execute, 
instead.

But there ought to be a way to chain them, so that mod_dir runs before 
ApacheHandler...
