I would think much, much simpler than that would be to have a force-welcome-page (or somesuch) element in the container web.xml which can be used instead of the welcome-file-list. <force-welcome-page>welcome.m</force-welcome-page> Instead of searching for a welcome file, it would just take blah/ and convert it to blah/welcome.m. I guess this would be pretty easy to implement with a ServletFilter.
