Thanks Piotras, but that didn't help (although I have a good db now :))

Tracking down midcom debug settings via mysql I found the problem: 
ais_port was set to 80 instead of 0. All is good now.

I will try to upgrade to mg-1.7.1 and mc-2.4.5 now. wish me luck ;-)
