Kevin, Thanks for getting back to me. I have used PSP Animation Shop in past too for animated gif's, I am a little rusty, but I think I will use that too as I am not as familiar with Adobe Photoshop for created animated gif's. I will look into Microsoft's gif animator...thanks for the tip! As far as the license issue, I recently downloaded another variation of the milonic menu and I entered my info again for my hospital. I hadn't heard back at all in past about a license # so I will wait and see if I receive any info this time. Thanks again for your help and advice! Hi Amelia, Sorry for the delayed reply... I was away most of last week. I find that the premade animated gifs that you can find on the web, although very cool in some cases, usually don't fit the bill for an specific use that I might have. Also, if you use animations from a web-based library, you'll probably be using the same images that any other sites use... decreasing the uniqueness of your own site. So I tend to avoid public domain animated gifs. When I need an animated gif, it's usually small and simple, so it's easy to make it myself. I also use Animation Shop that comes with PaintShop Pro. With very small or simple images, I sometimes find it easier just to make the multiple frames myself and put them together manually with Microsoft's Gif Animator (available free from MS). Regarding the licensing, I'm probably not the guy to ask... the Milonic folks (Andy.... et al.?) As far as I understand the current licensing requirements, non-profit organizations can still use the scripts free of charge, but must obtain and display a license number just the same. You might try applying for one again through the Milonic website. Commercial, for profit organizations must pay for their licenses. When you mentioned that you were doing a site for a hospital, I assumed that it was a "for profit" business, as many hospitals are. If your hospital is non-profit, I would guess that you qualify for a free license, but you still have to get the license number. Hope that helps, Kevin -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Amelia Kwiatkowski Sent: Wednesday, July 23, 2003 7:13 AM To: 'Milonic DHTML Menu' Subject: RE: [Milonic] Can Animated Gif's Be Used in Milonic Menu? Thanks, Kevin. Do you create your own animated gif's or have you found a lot available online? Thus far, I have only created animated gif's in Paint Shop Pro, but I am now exploring Adobe Photoshop and have Flash on hand as well to learn. As far as usage of the menu and a license, months back I entered my name and info when downloading the menu, but I never heard back. My employer is Holy Redeemer Health System and our I.S. dept. is located at Holy Redeemer Hospital and Medical Center, just outside Philadelphia. What constitutes a commercial enterprise vs. a non-profit organization which I thought we were? If we need to purchase a license, please advise and I will do so promptly. Thanks again for your help. Hi Amelia, While helping someone else out some time back, I used animated gifs in the menu items. It works just like using a static image. You can also use flash animations within the menu item. Version 3 is probably the most widely used version still, but version 5 is nearing completion (third release candidate now I think, but it may be even further along... haven't checked in about a week). If you use it on an intranet in a commercial enterprise, I believe you must still purchase a license. We are using the milonic menu on our Intranet since the spring. It is a hit, a nice improvement to our previous design. I have been asked to add a link for our Emergency Policies which flashes or has some special effect. Is it possible to include an animated gif on one particular menu item? I looked at the image samples which I will proceed to incorporate. However, this particular link needs either a different color or some animation for it to stand out. If worse comes to worse, I was thinking of adding a few icons, maybe animated (like on yahoo.com) for special links. I appreciate any ideas or thoughts anyone may have. On another note, is 3.0 the current version to use; I noticed 4.0 (to be called 5.0) is to be released soon. Also, I didn't hear back in past when I downloaded the menu so I assume it is okay that we are using the menu since we are a hospital using the menu on our local Intranet. Thanks for any help or advice about the animated gif.
