Loki, Nusphere, as far as I know is now and never was a 'free' dev package. It is an integrated binary distribution of LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, Perl and PHP). Several years ago it when this stuff was new it was very difficult to get all these packages to compile and play nice together. Nusphere made it easy -- a 10 min install. In any case, you should be able to pull down a Ming *.so file and do a require-- provided you have a recent version of PHP with your Nusphere dist.
