Hi and thanks for the reply...
I'll try compiling gif2mask on my host over the weekend and let you know
if I have any problems. I don't know if I can build ming - it was
already built as a module of PHP on my hosts. I def. can't build for
windows (my development environment)...
Thanks for the info about the search for this mailing list - I hadn't
managed to find that before. I see someone asked before about the format
for .msk files - maybe it is my best bet to skip the gif step and try
and go direct to a .msk file from the pixel data I have...
Looking into it it seems like a msk file is just an 8bit bitmap file...
At least thats what it says here:

and the msk file I generated at
http://ming.arock.dk/gif2msk/index.php
loads fine in my image editor if I rename it to .bmp
