Thanks, guys.

I went looking for any dev packages that might be afferent; and through a
combination of blind ignorance and Scots stubbornness, eventually made it
work.  (Actually, dead easy once I'd got the right packages installed.)

Installing:

     libmysql++-dev
     libmysql++2c2a
     libmysqlclient15-dev

did the trick for me on my home machine.

Once again, thanks.  Off to install it on the public-facing server now.
