I'll re-highlight what I felt was the most constructive portion of my
original post.

--> Stop improving mod_pubsub and start providing mod_pubsub
--> improvements for various opensource projects

E.g., Linux webmin screens that update with real-time monitoring statistics
E.g., Real-time web-based apache log viewer app
etc.

In the process, I would bet that packaging and other aspects of mod_pubsub
will get a lot better.

PS:  Don't worry, I won't lift a finger to help.  I'll just keep spouting
off like this at random times :-)

Most of the people that pick this widget up and go uh?! Where do I use it? I
haven't seen real world deployments highlighted to educate me on pubsub's
use.  Yeah, there is a packaging issue and the site is confusing - what part
do I take?  How do the peices fit together?

But, the issue still remains.  Where do I use it?  Why aren't there links to
other projects that use this cool technology?  Maybe it ain't so cool.

Oh, feel the butt getting hot; looks like flames acoming:

1. KnowNow scum
2. You just don't get it (maybe, where do you use pubsub?)
3. You're not a web head (true)
4. Contribute to open source or shut up (hmmm)
5. KnowNow scum ( true )
6. "I'm surprised you got this email thru' correctly" - did I (Adam, told me
jsut to reply to the digest)?  Did it get thru'?  I'll find out tomorrow
when I get the next digest. (LOL - it didn't!  This is the 2nd try)

Forgive my audacity for stating what is probably obvious but ...

I believe that the bottom line here is that there is a mismatch between the
(A)  perceived value of internet pubsub and (B) the perceived+actual effort
required to achieve it , especially in relation to the next-best available
solutions.



So ... you must either (1) increase A or (2) decrease B.  Unfortunately, you
won't get anywhere with very many people, even with near zero-B until A
crosses a certain threshold.

If you feel (A) is still low for the general masses, then the people
adopting mod_pubsub probably don't care much about (B).  They're hackers,
tinkerers and folks with the time and motivation to learn anything.  Is this
really the case?  I'm not sure but IMHO the slow takeup of mod_pubsub is not
a popularity or visibility problem.  I.e., it is not about "how do we get
more people to realize this is possible"

But clearly, you have little leverage over (A) and if you can decrease (B)
to near zero, you will increase the uptake rate.  Plus, you will maximize
the chances that some brilliant killer-app will be written.

As far as (A) is concerned, the biggest leverage may be the open source
community itself.  Stop improving mod_pubsub and start providing mod_pubsub
improvements for various opensource projects ... and get places like
www.vote.com to use the product.
