From a conversation in Cafe PubSub this morning
http://www.mod-pubsub.org/kn_apps/presence1/
we have a short discussion of off-host routes below.
I'm sending this to the list for archival purposes.
;) Adam
P.S. -- Joyce, you'll be happy to know that I am allowing
everyone to feel the full consequences of their actions. ;)

[Jos] can i ask a pubsub question? (10:55:03)
[Jos] ... i always seem to just miss every one... (10:55:31)

=joyceonFirebird= Status: Caffeinating.
[joyceonFirebird] Hi guys (10:58:45)
[Jos] Hello (10:58:50)
[joyceonFirebird] How's the Flash going, Jos? (10:59:02)
[Jos] so so - i'm kind of moving over to working on the javascript <-> flash stuff so we (we?) can do stuff with flash in the browser (10:59:35)
[joyceonFirebird] Great (10:59:47)
[Jos] rarther then the (possibily) less useful, but more 'fun' stuff of the stand-a-lone flash app (11:00:07)
[joyceonFirebird] I didn't even know Flash could stand alone (11:01:27)
[Jos] yes, you can compile it into an .exe or mac app. There are several products for windows that extend its functionality as a stand a lone app too (screenweaver and swf studio) (11:02:36)
[joyceonFirebird] Ah, that's why -- I'm pretty much a Linux girl (11:03:00)
[Jos] ya, on linux/unix you would only be able to 'run' the .swf files within the plugin. (11:03:34)
[bsittler] by the way jos, i am still connected, so ask away. i just get pulled away from chat for hours sometimes (11:03:41)
[bsittler] and hi joyce (11:03:50)
[joyceonFirebird] Hi Ben (11:03:57)
[Jos] so, lets say i have a html page on server A, and i want to 'connect' to a pubsub server on B. I am _not_ running one on server A. (11:04:29)
[Jos] Can i just load the lib's from B (11:04:40)
[Jos] and have a connection that way? (11:04:46)
[joyceonFirebird] If they're in the same domain (11:04:49)
[Jos] right (11:04:53)
[Jos] that's what i thought - you still have to host within the same domain, both the server and the client side pages (11:05:32)
[joyceonFirebird] Right (11:06:11)
[Jos] ok, thanks (11:07:15)
[joyceonFirebird] np (11:07:27)
=Jos= Status: off to get lunch.
[bsittler] yes, jos -- although sometimes you can get away with doing reverse-proxying of /kn from server A to /kn on server B (11:09:07)
[joyceonFirebird] Ah, wonderful cross-domain! (11:14:24)
[joyceonFirebird] What would our lives be without it? (11:14:30)
[Jos] the biggest thing that is missing for me (cuz its _all_ about me) is the inablity to route from Server A to Server B in pubsub right now. As i understand it anyway. The reason being... (11:20:43)
[Jos] that i had an idea for a distrubuted virtual space, using flash as the front end and the python pubsub server as the backend. Now in my model, i'd need to be able to route between two or more servers (11:21:33)
[joyceonFirebird] I'll let Ben handle this one (11:22:55)
[Jos] heh (11:23:06)
[bsittler] jos, actually that feature is present in the Perl server but not yet in the Python server (11:31:43)
[bsittler] we call it "off-host routes" (11:31:52)
[bsittler] but even in the perl server the client must connect to the "source" server to establish a route pointing to the "destination" server (11:32:24)
[bsittler] provided the "source" server is a Perl server (or KnowNow LiveServer) the destination can be any KnowNow or mod-pubsub server (11:32:59)
[bsittler] of course adding off-host routes to the Python server has been on the to-do list for some time (11:33:24)
[bsittler] now that we have a Python pubsublib it might even be fairly easy (11:33:43)
[bsittler] care to try it? (11:33:52)
