I remembered the debug flag and turned it on. After clearing the cache,
this is what I get:

 MT::App::CMS=HASH(0x8381928) Searching Keyword bowie in music
 MT::App::CMS=HASH(0x8381928) No cache for this query
 MT::App::CMS=HASH(0x8381928) Getting http://xml.amazon.com/onca/xml3?t=blogcriticsco-20&dev-t=DW30ZD66MYYWI&KeywordSearch=bowie&mode=music&type=lite&page=1&f=xml
 MT::App::CMS=HASH(0x8381928) Saving cache to ./cache/amazon.blogcriticsco20liteKeywordbowiemusic.1.xml

Subsequent rebuilds give me:

 MT::App::CMS=HASH(0x837c828) Searching Keyword bowie in music
 MT::App::CMS=HASH(0x837c828) Cache Exists: ./cache/amazon.blogcriticsco20liteKeywordbowiemusic.1.xml

All very nice, just like it should all work, and yet the page still says:
