I'll share a few thoughts on upgrading. Several years ago I left a
tech job. The market sucked, and the only people calling me much was
MS. (And I started the interview process with them but they way the
did things was so old I didn't want any part of it.)

I wanted some new "toys" so I decided that whatever I bought had to
pay for itself within 3 months. I've kept that same attitude for
years so upgrades like Tiger find a way of paying for themselves.

Another thought on upgrading is that there's no cost difference
between upgrading every 3-4 years, or yearly. In other words, the
cost difference between a new Mac and a 3 or 4 year old Mac is
roughly the same as the difference between a new and year old Mac,
multiplied by 3 or 4. (New Mac - Mac age 4 = New Mac - [Mac age 1 x 4]).

PS. There's also a thread on the forum regarding Tiger on older Macs.
