There's no question that it's different, but I far prefer it, since I can switch among tabs by quick glance at the image, rather than having to read and parse the often-short tab titles. One thought about your concern about which tab you're in - do you have the tab drawer on the left or right. If right, as I suspect, that's more out of your visual way than the left, and you might try moving it. Option-click on the Tabs icon in the toolbar to do that. Also, I'd ask why you're so concerned about which tab you're in? That should be obvious, since it's the page you're looking at.
