Good question. I don't know if this is the OP's problem, but I 
use an external monitor at work with my MacBook and had lots of 
problems waking it up after the monitor had been connected. My 
work-around has been to put the MacBook into hibernation (deep 
sleep) instead of normal sleep. Waking from hibernation gives me 
none of the problems that occur when waking from normal sleep. 
Also, waking from normal sleep (i.e. simply closing the lid or 
choosing Sleep from the Apple menu) gives no problems if the 
computer has not had an external monitor connected prior to 
sleeping. There are at least two or three Dashboard widgets that 
can trigger deep sleep.
