Multiple blank tabs

I have been having trouble opening image files, particularly jpeg's.  If I click a link that is supposed to open a picture or right click the picture and choose "open in new tab" all I get is about twenty blank tabs opened.  The only way to view the image is to save to disk first.  Any ideas?
