Marking messages as filtered?

Greetings all,

On many occasions I find myself filtering messages and then going to add a rule to auto-filter them, only to discover that I already had a rule in place. When creating filters there's an option that can be checked off that says "mark messages as filtered" which sounds like it'd solve my time-wasting behavior. I've been using this feature for a very, very long time and I'm still not sure how I can tell whether a message is filtered or not (without going to the filter and checking to see if the unread counter has increased and/or the message is listed there). Whether it's on or off, I can't see any difference. Is this a broken feature? Am I trying to use it the wrong way or not looking in the right place?

For reference, I'm using Opera 9.63 on Mac OS X, but I also had the "mark messages as filtered" feature engaged back in version 8 and probably 7 (if it existed back then), which would have been on Windows (not that the OS should matter, I'd think).

Thanks, and have a good rest of the week,
David
