I found that the Skin I had chosen for the earlier version of Opera 
didn't  sit well with 10.x. Changing skins worked and I now can see 
the text for  the menus. I know it's a beginners mistake. But there 
ya are. Changing the  Skin fix my menu problems.

You're right--that fixed the problem.  I had already discovered after I had wrote the intial email that going to a different desktop on the same computer didn't create the same problem, so I knew then that it wasn't an Opera bug but rather something on my own desktop.
